Anthony Fauci says he has no plans to resign
Dr. Anthony Fauci said he has no plans to resign as the head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases despite a growing rift with the White House. The 78-year-old physician and immunologist, who has been leading the White House's coronavirus response, told the Atlantic on Wednesday that he intends to remain in his role regardless of criticism from other administration officials. Asked if he has considered resigning, Fauci said, "No. I think the problem is too important for me to get into those kinds of thoughts and discussions. I just want to do my job. I’m really good at it. I think I can contribute. And I’m going to keep doing it." The remarks came a day after USA Today published an opinion piece by White House economic adviser Peter Navarro that derided Fauci's competency. "Dr. Anthony Fauci has a good bedside manner with the public, but he has been wrong about everything I have interacted with him on," Navarro wrote. "So when you ask me whether I listen to Dr. Fauci’s advice, my answer is: only with skepticism and caution."
The White House distanced itself from Navarro's op-ed on Wednesday. "The Peter Navarro op-ed didn’t go through normal White House clearance processes and is the opinion of Peter alone," tweeted Alyssa Farah, White House director of strategic communications. "[Trump] values the expertise of the medical professionals advising his Administration." President Trump also condemned Navarro, telling reporters he "shouldn't be doing that." But while Fauci has preached caution in regards to the pandemic, Trump has voiced support for reopenings, even as coronavirus cases spike in some parts of the country. Fauci was asked about Navarro's commentary in the interview with the Atlantic. "I can’t explain Peter Navarro. He’s in a world by himself," he said. "So I don’t even want to go there." Several news outlets received a memo over the weekend attributed to an unnamed White House official that included a list of examples of how Fauci “has been wrong on things.”
