word.. the other prob (for me anyway) is that eyeballing can get thrown off by the text formatting chars, because the board counts those too in the char count.

..but a human looking at "character count" will be more apt to discard the "control chars" that the formatting is… because it isn't a textual character

So I just got in the habit of looking for the selection count in n++
