Coronavirus antibody tests could be wrong up to half the time: CDC

Antibody tests for COVID-19 — used to determine if people have been infected in the past with the deadly illness — might be wrong up to half the time, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced.

The antibody tests, often called serologic tests, look for evidence of an immune response to infection, but are not accurate enough to use in making important policy decisions, the CDC said in new guidance.

“Serologic test results should not be used to make decisions about grouping persons residing in or being admitted to congregate settings, such as schools, dormitories, or correctional facilities,” the federal agency said.

“Serologic test results should not be used to make decisions about returning persons to the workplace,” it added.

The tests “can play an important role in understanding the virus’s epidemiology in the general population and identifying groups at higher risk for infection,” the CDC said.

Is the coronavirus antibody test a magic bullet — or false hope?

The tests “do not typically replace direct detection methods as the primary tool for diagnosing an active SARS-CoV-2 infection, but they do have several important applications in monitoring and responding to the COVID-19 pandemic,” it continued.

“Although serologic tests should not be used at this time to determine if an individual is immune, these tests can help determine the proportion of a population previously infected with SARS-CoV-2 and provide information about populations that may be immune and potentially protected.”

Health officials or health care providers who use the tests must use the most accurate ones they can find and may need to test people twice, the CDC said.

“In most of the country, including areas that have been heavily impacted, the prevalence of SARS-CoV-2 antibody is expected to be low, ranging from less than 5% to 25%, so that testing at this point might result in relatively more false positive results and fewer false-negative results,” it added.

Respiratory infection is much higher among healthcare workers wearing cloth masks compared to medical masks, research shows. Cloth masks should not be used by workers in any healthcare setting, authors of the new study say.

The widespread use of cloth masks by healthcare workers may actually put them at increased risk of respiratory illness and viral infections and their global use should be discouraged, according to a UNSW study.

The results of the first randomized clinical trial (RCT) to study the efficacy of cloth masks were published in the journal BMJ Open.

The trial saw 1607 hospital healthcare workers across 14 hospitals in the Vietnamese capital, Hanoi, split into three groups: those wearing medical masks, those wearing cloth masks and a control group based on usual practice, which included mask wearing.

Workers used the mask on every shift for four consecutive weeks.

The study found respiratory infection was much higher among healthcare workers wearing cloth masks.

The penetration of cloth masks by particles was almost 97% compared to medical masks with 44%.

Professor Raina MacIntyre, lead study author and head of UNSW's School of Public Health and Community Medicine, said the results of the study caution against the use of cloth masks.

"Masks are worn to protect from infection during pandemics and outbreaks, especially when there are no drugs or vaccines available for protection," Professor MacIntyre said.

"Masks are especially important for frontline doctors and nurses, as their protection from infection is key to maintaining the ability to tackle a pandemic effectively.

"We should be cautious about cloth mask use in healthcare settings, particularly high-risk situations such as emergency departments, intensive care, paediatric or respiratory wards."

Cloth masks remain widely used globally because they are a cheaper option especially in areas where there are shortages of protective equipment, including in Asian countries, which have historically been affected by emerging infectious diseases, as well as in West Africa, which was the epicentre of the recent Ebola epidemic.

The authors speculate that the cloth masks' moisture retention, their reuse and poor filtration may explain the increased risk of infection.

Professor MacIntyre, who has completed the largest body of clincial trial research on respiratory protection in health workers internationally, said emerging infectious diseases are not constrained within geographical borders.

"Effective controls of outbreaks and pandemics at the origin impacts us directly, so it is important for global disease control that the use of cloth masks be discouraged in high-risk situations," she said.

"Despite more than half the world using cloth masks, global disease control guidelines, including those from the World Health Organisation, fail to clearly specify conditions of their use.

"These guidelines need to be updated to reflect the higher infection risk posed by cloth masks, as found in our study."

Professor MacIntyre said the study's results pointed to the effectiveness of medical masks, in addition to the harm caused by cloth masks.

"Additional research is urgently needed to build on our study's findings."

The trial was a collaboration between researchers in Australia and the National Institute for Hygiene and Epidemiology in Vietnam and was funded by an Australian Research Council Linkage Grant.

A separate expert review by Professor MacIntyre published in the British Medical Journal earlier this month found that the lack of research on facemasks and respirators is reflected in varied and sometimes conflicting global policies and guidelines.

The attack goes way beyond crypto Twitter as large corporations, their founders, CEOs, and high-profile people began tweeting about a similar bitcoin giveaway. They include the accounts of Apple, former U.S. president Barack Obama, Microsoft founder Bill Gates, Cash App, Spacex and Tesla CEO Elon Musk, Floyd Mayweather, Google, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden, Kanye West, former New York City mayor Mike Bloomberg, Mr. Beast, Uber, and Berkshire Hathaway CEO Warren Buffett.

Many accounts, including Jeff Bezos’, tweeted: “I have decided to give back to my community. All bitcoin sent to my address below will be sent back doubled. I am only doing a maximum of $50,000,000. bc1qxy2kgdygjrsqtzq2n0yrf2493p83kkfjhx0wlh Enjoy.”

This particular BTC address used by the scammers has raked in 12.862 BTC with a total value of about $118,495 at press time. The transactions can be tracked here.

Some accounts, including Barack Obama’s, tweeted: “I’m giving back to my community due to covid-19. All bitcoin sent to my address below will be sent back doubled. If you send $1,000, I will send you back $2,000 … Only doing this for the next 30 minutes. Enjoy.”

Most tweets were quickly deleted by the account owners. Some accounts, such as Elon Musk’s, made several tweets about the bitcoin scam after each was deleted. However, not all accounts affected were popular; there were some with about 10 followers tweeting about the same bitcoin scam.

The sheer size of the security breach has many people speculate about how the attack happened. Many victims of the breach are still investigating the cause of the hack. Some speculate that the Twitter API has been compromised while several people say that hacked Twitter accounts did not have 2FA set up — but this theory was quickly disputed. “No way are all these accounts unprotected by strong passwords and TOTP 2FA,” famous crypto author Andreas Antonopoulos tweeted. Gemini Exchange co-founder Tyler Winklevoss affirmed: “we had 2FA enabled for Gemini. We are currently investigating [the] root cause.”

Malwaretech tweeted, “Hearing a lot of unconfirmed rumors a Twitter employee with access to the user management panel was hacked.” Antonopoulos added:

Given the accounts that got hacked more recently (Apple, Uber, Gates, Musk, etc), I am now leaning towards this being an internal compromise of a Twitter system, not an API attack from a social aggregator service.

After about eight hours, Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey finally tweeted: “Tough day for us at Twitter. We all feel terrible this happened. We’re diagnosing and will share everything we can when we have a more complete understanding of exactly what happened.” Meanwhile, the price of bitcoin remains largely unaffected by the news of the hack, currently still stuck at around $9,200.

A hacker allegedly behind a spate of Twitter account hacks on Wednesday gained access to a Twitter “admin” tool on the company’s network that allowed them to hijack high-profile Twitter accounts to spread a cryptocurrency scam, according to a person with direct knowledge of the incident. Unusual hack, common scam

While the scope of Wednesday’s Twitter hack is unprecedented on the social network, the kinds of scams the hacked accounts promoted are common. Scammers take over high-profile Twitter accounts using breached or leaked passwords and post messages that encourage users to post their cryptocurrency funds to a particular address under the guise that they’ll double their “investment.” In reality, it’s simple theft, but it’s a scam that works.

The main blockchain address used on the scam site had already collected more than 12.5 bitcoin — some $116,000 in USD — and it’s going up by the minute.

A spokesperson for Binance told TechCrunch: “The security team is actively investigating the situation of this coordinated attack on the crypto industry.” Several other companies affected by the account hacks did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

It’s not immediately known how the account hacks took place. Security researchers, however, found that the attackers had fully taken over the victims’ accounts, and also changed the email address associated with the account to make it harder for the real user to regain access.

Scammers frequently reply to high-profile accounts, like celebrities and public figures, to hijack the conversation and hoodwink unsuspecting victims. Twitter typically shuts these accounts down pretty fast.

A Twitter spokesperson, when reached, said the company was “looking into” the matter but didn’t immediately comment.
