Prince Andrew ‘invited Ghislaine Maxwell to Buckingham

Palace for secret meeting’

PRINCE ANDREW has come under intense scrutiny for his

friendship with Jeffrey Epstein and his former associate

Ghislaine Maxwell - and the latter made a secret trip to

Buckingham Palace where she reportedly sat on the Queen's

throne.

"The Duke of York served as the UK's special representative for trade and investment for 10 years – a spell that ended in July 2011 as his suitability for the job came under question. A key reason for this was his link to Epstein – who was due to stand trial for sex trafficking last year before he killed himself in prison. Prince Andrew has also been accused of having sex with trafficking victim Virginia Roberts Giuffre on three separate occasions. Buckingham Palace has denied these claims, and said they were “false and without foundation”. But this didn't prevent Andrew from stepping back from royal duties after a disastrous interview with BBC Newsnight's Emily Maitlis last year.

In the interview, he said he would assist with investigations into Epstein and his former partner Ghislaine Maxwell, who has also been arrested on charges of sex trafficking.

However, US prosecutors have claimed Prince Andrew has not cooperated with their requests for an interview.

Maxwell was arrested on July 2 and denies the charges against her.

Prince Andrew invited the British socialite to Buckingham Palace in June last year, The Sun claimed.

That Maxwell was allowed into the iconic royal setting attracted fresh criticism."

BREAKING COVER Prince Andrew seen for first time since

friend Ghislaine Maxwell sobs in court

Debbie White

Updated: 16 Jul 2020, 8:19

"A GRINNING Prince Andrew was spotted for the first time in public after pal Ghislaine Maxwell sobbed in court as she was denied bail.

Pics of the Duke of York show him looking relaxed and sharing a laugh with his bodyguard while driving his Range Rover from Royal Lodge Windsor.

The snaps were taken hours after Maxwell, Jeffrey Epstein's longtime associate, pleaded not guilty to luring young girls so the late financier could sexually abuse them.

US District Judge Alison Nathan in Manhattan rejected Maxwell's bid for bail, agreeing with prosecutors that the wealthy socialite posed a flight risk.

During a hearing lasting more than two hours, Nathan said that Maxwell has "demonstrated sophistication in hiding her resources and herself."

Maxwell wept as she was kept in custody and forced to wait a year to stand trial accused of sex trafficking.

Prosecutors have accused Maxwell, 58, of helping Epstein recruit and eventually abuse girls as young as 14 from 1994 to 1997 and lying about her role in depositions in 2016.

Epstein's former girlfriend and longtime associate was arrested in Bradford, New Hampshire, where authorities said she was hiding out at a sprawling property she bought in December in an all-cash transaction with her identity shielded."

Socialite to alleged sex trafficker: Who is Ghislaine Maxwell?

From parties at the palace to a prison cell. An inside look at a

Jeffery Epstein's accused accomplice

"She was once the toast of high society, graced the cover of tabloid magazines and was invited to the biggest events in Britain.

Now 58-year-old Ghislaine Maxwell is facing charges she helped recruit girls to be abused by convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, who died last year.

Appearing via video link in a New York courtroom Tuesday, Maxwell — in a plain brown T-shirt, her signature short hair now long and pulled back in a bun — was denied bail after pleading not guilty to six criminal counts; four related to transporting minors for sexual assault and two for perjury.

The judge ruled the wealthy socialite — who holds American, French and British citizenship — was a flight risk.

"Ghislaine Maxwell is quickly becoming the most notorious, infamous woman in British society," said Andrew Pierce, a consultant editor for The Daily Mail in London, who has reported on high society in Britain for decades.

"She loves being talked about but she didn't want to be talked about in this way."

"It certainly was a pivotal moment in her life," says Nigel Cawthorne, author of Prince Andrew: Epstein and the Palace, a book that looks at connections between Epstein and the prince, including Maxwell's relationship with them.

Cawthorne says after her father's death, Maxwell left London with a modest trust fund and moved to New York where she met Epstein.

"She got friendly with Epstein and seemed to have lived an extraordinary luxurious lifestyle — presumably on his money," Cawthorne said.

Through the years, the couple socialized with the likes of U.S. President Donald Trump, former president Bill Clinton and Prince Andrew.

Cawthorne says Maxwell was good friends with the prince. "He really supported her during the time after her father died, which is why they are so close," he said.

Andrew has been embroiled in accusations linked to the pair. One of Epstein's accusers, Virginia Guiffre, says she was forced, by Maxwell, to have sex with the prince when she was 17 years old. Andrew denies the allegations."

Inside Ghislaine Maxwell's Jail—Corrupt Staff, Sexual Assaults

and Beatings

BY JACK ROYSTON ON 7/16/20 AT 3:54 AM EDT

"Ghislaine Maxwell will be locked in her cell for 23 hours a day for the next year at a prison with a history of "corrupt staff," beatings and sexual assault.

The British socialite was denied bail this week after a judge ruled the risk of her attempting to flee was "simply too great."

Her home for the next year will therefore be the same prison used to house R Kelly with cells roughly 8-by-10 feet.

She faces a 17-page indictment accusing her of grooming girls as young as 14 for sex with her former boyfriend Jeffrey Epstein.

Until her trial next year, she will be held at the Metropolitan Detention Center, Brooklyn.

She has been forced to wear paper clothes and had her sheets taken away to prevent suicide, the Associated Press reported.

Former warden Cameron Lindsay told Newsweek: "It would be very, very difficult because conditions are very austere, very plain, regimented, rigid and controlled. Security at that facility is paramount."

He added: "I would expect her to be locked down 23 hours a day. I'm sure she'll be getting legal visits though throughout the day.

"She would only be moved for visiting purposes or to go to one hour of recreation a day.

"Recreation would be taken in a small caged-in area in close proximity to her cell.

"It could be indoors or outdoors. But she would have recreation alone.""

Remembering Lauren Bessette: the sister of Carolyn

Bessette-Kennedy who died alongside her

The tragic death of Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy and her husband

John F. Kennedy Jr in an airplane crash shocked the world in

1999, but less is known about the other passenger on board that

fateful day - Carolyn's younger sister, Lauren

by REBECCA COPE

THURSDAY 16 JULY 2020

"The tragic deaths of John F. Kennedy Jr and his glamorous wife Carolyn Bessette shocked the world in the summer of 1999, after the private airplane that they were flying crashed into the Atlantic Ocean on 16 July. A young, beautiful and wealthy couple with their entire lives ahead of them, it is unsurprising that headlines focussed on their untimely deaths for days and weeks after the event, just the latest example of a family supposedly 'cursed'.

Carolyn was a stylish socialite, popular on the New York scene, and a frequent presence in the newspapers' party pages, while her husband was the namesake son of one of the most beloved US Presidents of all time, who had himself had a tragic ending.

Yet there was a third, mostly forgotten passenger on board that doomed aircraft travelling to Cape Cod via Martha's Vineyard in July, whose story has largely gone untold. Lauren Bessette - the older and beloved sister of Carolyn, one of her closest friends, and also reportedly the girlfriend of another Kennedy clan member, JFK Jr's cousin, Bobby Shriver.

Raised in Greenwich, Connecticut, Lauren was only 14 months older than her sister Carolyn, and had a twin sister, Lisa, too. She studied economics at Hobart and William Smith Colleges (which now has a lab in the Asian Languages and Cultures programme named after her) and soon scored a graduate position at Morgan Stanley in Hong Kong, where she became fluent in Mandarin. After scaling the corporate ladder, she went from vice president to principal, and relocated back to the US, moving to New York where her Carolyn lived."

‘Every gift but length of years’: The death of

John F. Kennedy Jr. in 1999

By Deb Kiner | dkiner@pennlive.com

"On July 16, 1999, Camelot suffered yet another loss.

On that day John F. Kennedy Jr., who most remember best from the photo at the 1963 funeral of his father, President John F. Kennedy, died in a plane crash along with his wife and her sister.

Kennedy, and his wife, Carolyn Bessette Kennedy, were on their way to Hyannis Port for the wedding of his cousin, Rory Kennedy. The couple planned to drop Carolyn’s sister, Lauren, in Martha’s Vineyard, before heading to the wedding.

JFK Jr. was piloting the single-engine airplane that crashed into the Atlantic Ocean.

The trio had left from Essex County Airport in Caldwell, New Jersey. Kennedy had checked in with the control tower, but the plane was reported missing after it failed to arrive on time.

The investigation revealed that the airplane crashed into the ocean nose first. At 2 a.m. the Kennedy family reported to authorities that the plane had not arrived as expected. The search started at 4 a.m.

On July 19, luggage and debris that had washed ashore were found in Martha’s Vineyard and debris was found on the ocean floor. On July 21, the bodies were found, still strapped in their seats."

America’s confrontation with China over maritime claims enters

a new, more combative phase

by Jamie McIntyre

July 16, 2020 07:11 AM

"‘IT’S NOT CHINA’S MARITIME EMPIRE’: Secretary of State Mike Pompeo’s Monday declaration on China’s expansive claims to the South China Sea has set the stage for a new effort by the United States to rally other nations in the Indo-Pacific region to join in confronting Beijing.

“On Monday, for the first time, we made our policy on the South China Sea crystal clear. It’s not China’s maritime empire,” Pompeo said yesterday at a briefing for reporters. “If Beijing violates the international law and free nations do nothing, then history shows that the CCP will simply take more territory.”

“You’re seeing countries all throughout Asia, and indeed in Southeast Asia and in the Pacific, recognizing that the United States is prepared to do the things necessary to assist them in protecting their valid legal claims,” Pompeo said. “We’ll go provide them the assistance we can, whether that’s in multilateral bodies, whether that’s in ASEAN, whether that’s through legal responses. We use all the tools we can.”

“Our statement gives significant support to ASEAN leaders who have declared that the South China Sea disputes must be resolved through international law, not ‘might makes right,’” he said.

‘IMPORTANT SHIFT,’ NOT ‘A RADICAL BREAK’: The Pompeo declaration marks “an important shift” but “not a radical break from past policy,” writes Gregory Poling, a senior fellow at the Center for Strategic and International Studies.

“Pompeo’s statement does not alter U.S. neutrality on the territorial disputes in the South China Sea. Washington still has no interest in wading into the historical morass of which country has sovereignty over each of the Spratly and Paracel Islands,” Polling says. “But it does now explicitly take a position on the maritime disputes over water and seabed rights.”

“This new rhetorical position won’t have much effect by itself. But as the opening gambit in a long-term effort to impose cost on China and rally support for U.S. partners, it could be significant,” he argues. “The most immediate effect of this policy change will be on the diplomatic front. It is much easier to rally international support against ‘illegal’ activity than against actions that are merely distasteful or destabilizing.”

A NEW REALITY: Later in a radio interview, Pompeo said the Trump administration’s more direct challenges to China are based on a recognition that the past policy, which China called win-win cooperation, wasn’t working.

“The American people have been fed a bill of goods, that if we simply engage with China, that they would leave us alone and behave in a way that was consistent with how other large nations behaved,” Pompeo told Simon Conway of WHO radio in Des Moines, Iowa. “That hasn’t happened. We thought they would open up politically. That was the theory of the foreign policy establishment. It didn’t happen.”

Beijing’s crackdown on Hong Kong is just another example of how China is increasingly flouting international norms, Pompeo said.

“The Chinese Communist Party made a commitment to both the United Kingdom and to the people of Hong Kong, and indeed, to the world. This was an international treaty that said that there would be a separate system there in Hong Kong and that they would be guaranteed certain rights that weren’t available in other parts of China,” he said. “Now, the Chinese Communist Party has welched on that deal.”"
