It reeks of being a nation-wide test of character to me, almost to see if there are enough good, strong, righteous people left in the country to make it worth the effort to save. Like Lot. That story is an insurance policy that the righteous will always be saved against the judgement to come.
I would love to keep my country, my life, my non fortune, my sacred honor, but I love my Father, Maker of the Math and if he asks for all of them he will have them. At least from me.
