Exchanging the eternal for the earthly is a huge temptation for some. Just like Christians believe servitude to God constitutes eternal communion with God in the afterlife, these people fall into the "better to reign in Hell" philosophy. It's shortsighted.

So, I'm a firm believer that "Watch the Water" was in reference to the painting behind group photos in NK. I also believe this might be one of those times where "multiple meanings exist" applies.
