Your visual cortex in the back of your brain is trained to find faces in the information fed to it via the optic nerve. Try being awake for too long, like two days or so, you will be seeing faces everywhere because the brain is shutting down functions less needed due to lack of regeneration by sleep. Discernment of faces is one such function.

All matter is but energy, as you say, we experience this realm as solid because our apparatus to experience with is made of the same frequency of energy, so low in frequency it actually coagulates and seems solid.
