'Plainly illegal': Georgia Bureau of Investigations probing DA in Rayshard Brooks case over use of subpoenas

The Georgia Bureau of Investigations is broadening its investigation of Fulton County District Attorney Paul Howard following his use of a subpoena to obtain police records in the Rayshard Brooks case. Brooks, a black man, was shot and killed on June 12 by Garrett Rolfe, a white Atlanta police officer, after Brooks stole an officer's Taser and pointed it at police as he ran away during an arrest. Just days after the incident, Howard charged Rolfe with nearly a dozen felonies, including murder. The GBI said at the time that it was "not consulted" on the charges that the DA filed. Howard issued a subpoena to the police department on June 13 regarding Rolfe’s “use of force incident,” according to the Atlanta-Journal Constitution.

A city official told the newspaper that the subpoena was later withdrawn before a city official was to appear before the grand jury. In Fulton County at the time the subpoena was issued, the next grand jury was not set to convene until July. A person who misuses a subpoena could be found in contempt of court, ordered to spend up to 20 days in jail, and face a $300 fine, the AJC reported. Separately, state courts have ruled that due to the coronavirus pandemic, courts cannot summon citizens to sit on grand juries until at least Aug. 11. “There isn’t a grand jury physically meeting now, and a grand jury did not, in fact, issue that subpoena,” Bruce Harvey, a criminal defense attorney in the city said of Howard. “That subpoena is plainly illegal.” Howard's office acknowledged in a statement issued Friday that “there has been much confusion about whether my office legally issued a grand jury subpoena on June 13" and said there would be a grand jury regarding public corruption cases “which would be authorized to affirm the issuance of a subpoena.” The GBI also has several other pending investigations into Howard's conduct as district attorney.

Roger Stone: Kevin McCarthy and Elise Stefanik 'wanted me to die' in prison

Roger Stone claimed House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy and New York GOP Rep. Elise Stefanik wanted him to die in prison after they urged President Trump not to commute his sentence or issue a pardon before the November election. Stone, whose three-year sentence was commuted by Trump days before he was supposed to report to prison, claimed during a podcast hosted by Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk on Wednesday that these Republican lawmakers were concerned about how it would play out for Republicans. "Congressman Matt Gaetz from my home state of Florida, who I know was out there when Kevin McCarthy and Elise Stefanik were arguing against any clemency for Roger Stone because it might cost the Republicans seats," Stone said. "I know that Matt Gaetz was standing tall, both privately and in public, on my behalf."

Stone, 67, reiterated the accusation on a different podcast, Fox Across America with Jimmy Failla, that same day. "I know that Kevin McCarthy and Elise Stefanik were lobbying the president against any act of clemency. They, I guess, wanted me to die in a fetid, squalid hellhole in Georgia of coronavirus," he said. McCarthy and Stefanik advised Trump to consider waiting to grant Stone clemency during a May trip on Air Force One to Florida, a source told Politico. Republican Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz, who was also on the flight and has been praised by Stone, urged the president not to wait. Stone, a target of special counsel Robert Mueller's Russia investigation, was convicted of lying to congressional investigators about his attempted outreach to WikiLeaks, obstructing a congressional investigation, and attempting to intimidate a possible congressional witness.

National Association of Police Organizations endorses Trump

The endorsement bolsters Trump's law and order platform

The National Association of Police Organizations said Wednesday that it is endorsing President Trump's 2020 reelection bid. “Our endorsement recognizes your steadfast and very public support for our men and women on the front lines, especially during this time of unfair and inaccurate opprobrium being directed at our members by so many,” the group said in a letter to Trump. The group, a coalition of unions and police associations, represents roughly 1,000 police units and associations and 241,000 sworn law enforcement officers, according to the NAPO website. Trump and his supporters have touted the endorsement as a validation of the president's law and order platform, in office and as a reelection message, as he tries for a second term against Democrat challenger Joe Biden.

Republican candidates have historically run on such a platform. Trump has attempted to capitalize on it amid the nationwide demonstrations following the May 25 death of George Floyd that have includes protests in which stores have been looted and police officers injured. Trump used National Guard units to calm unrest in Washington, D.C., and has offered federal assistance in other U.S. cities in which violent protests have erupted.

Roger Stone unbound, ungagged: Mueller prosecutors 'satanic'

You were expecting the perpetual bad boy of GOP politics would emerge from his long ordeal at the hands of Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s prosecutors chastened, housebroken, mellowed? Fat chance. Newly delivered by President Trump, with just days to spare, from the 40-month prison sentence that had been looming before him, Roger Stone is wearing a t-shirt blaring the words, "Roger Stone Still Did Nothing Wrong." You were expecting the perpetual bad boy of GOP politics would emerge from his long ordeal at the hands of Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s prosecutors chastened, housebroken, mellowed? Fat chance. "I can guarantee you, I don't intend to become boring" says Stone. "I really do believe that those who are trying to undo this president, those who are trying to destroy me, trying to destroy Michael Flynn — who's a very good man and great American patriot war hero — I do believe they're satanic," Stone tells Just The News in a podcast interview for The Pod’s Honest Truth. “I don't believe that any of these people involved in my prosecution are really believers in God."

Stone’s recent biblical talk is no surprise, given his decision earlier this year to follow Jesus. After a rough 2019 that saw him convicted of lying to Congress and obstructing a congressional investigation into the now-debunked Trump-Russian collusion narrative, Stone drew closer to God. Now, President Trump has commuted his sentence, and it has freed Stone to speak out against a prosecution team he believes was stacked against him from the start. "The prosecutors in my view were not honest," Stone says. "I think they were politically motivated. They wanted me to lie, to bear false witness against the president in return for some kind of leniency … I know of no illegal or inappropriate actions by the president whatsoever. They went through every email, every text message, and every phone call. There is no evidence to the contrary." Stone details his long bill of alleged prosecutorial abuses in a recent opinion piece. Speaking to Just the News, Stone specifically pointed to a very unusual request by the prosecution. "The prosecutors in the case made a motion before the court that I could not raise the misconduct of the Office of Special Counsel, or the Department of Justice, or the FBI, or any member of Congress in my defense," says Stone. "Now, firstly, that's unconstitutional … but if you think about it for a moment, why would the prosecution even make such a motion, if there was no misconduct for me to raise?" Just The News reached out to former members of the special counsel's office for a response, but a spokesman declined to comment.

Roger Stone would be the first one to admit that at this point the old Roger would be thirsting to settle scores with his persecutors. But with a nod to his newfound faith, he’s now leaving it in more capable hands. "In the old days, I would have wanted revenge, I would have wanted to take revenge against every one of them," Stone says. “But now I realize that vengeance is God's; it's not mine … they will get their just due. They will get it from a vengeful God … He knows who the bad guys are. I don't have to worry about it anymore because it's in His hands." Social media giants Instagram, Twitter and Facebook have their own ideas about who the bad guys are — and all three have kicked Stone off their platforms. Stone says he has business and defamation lawyers looking at legal options to get back on. For now, he seems satisfied with Parler, a social media app that is growing more popular with conservatives who suspect the aforementioned sites of selectively censoring conservative user content.

As for his future, Stone says he’s still mulling whether he’ll appeal his guilty verdict. He admits that it would be a gamble, considering he believes he didn’t get a fair trial the first time around — and anything could happen in a retrial. For now, Stone is just glad he's not going to prison. At 67 years old and with a history of asthma, walking into a jail in the middle of the COVID-19 epidemic could have been a death sentence. He is grateful to the president who spared him. "He saved my life, I have no doubt about that," Stone says. "He didn't have to do this. This is costing him money. He's subject to ridicule and abuse every single day." It's good to have friends in high places, whether in the Oval Office or … higher.

Defying defund the police movement, these companies are backing the blue

The killing of George Floyd in May while in the custody of Minneapolis police officers has set off a wave of protests and a movement to defunding the police. However, amid the push by many corporations vowing to stand with the Black Lives Matter movement, some CEOs and business figures have stepped up to defend the police, even as public support for police has at times led to social backlash and buying boycotts. Here are a few companies who have stood up and are backing the blue.

Ford: Last week, some employees of Ford wrote an open letter to CEO Jim Hackett to stop production of the law enforcement vehicles, including the Ford Police Interceptor. But Hackett refused to stop operations of law enforcement vehicles it’s been producing for nearly 70 years. In a statement to the employees, he said he did not view the production and distribution of police vehicles as an addition to the defund the police conversation, saying it is not "controversial that the Ford Police Interceptor helps officers do their job." Axon: The technology company that supplies police with nonlethal weapons, such as tasers, defends its continued production of weapons. Hadi Partovi, a director on Axon's board, said in a statement that the company is helping the public with the types of weapons it produces. "The transparency and accountability provided by bodycams aren’t magical solutions to prevent deaths, but they do give a clearer picture of what happened." Axon is also calling for more innovation and technology to stop police brutality.

Égard Watches: In June, a Los Angeles-based luxury watch company released a pro-law enforcement ad that showed police and a dog rescue. Company CEO lan Srulovicz said he did the ad because he felt like "our politicians, the media, companies around the country, they turned their back on police." Chick-Fil-A: In June, the fast-food restaurant was under fire after some chains distributed shirts supporting the pro-law enforcement organization Blue Lives Matter. The company issued a statement that the individual statements did not reflect the entirety of the company, however it said it did endorse the efforts. Local establishments on multiple occasions over the years have created shirts expressing support, including shirts saying “Back the Blue.” Five Guys: After three police officers were denied service at a Five Guys restaurant in Daphne, Ala., the company said that it had fired some of the employees and others would receive additional training. "Five Guys and the Daphne, AL franchise want to thank the Daphne Police Department for their support in working together toward a resolution," the Five Guys statement said. "As we uphold our commitment to fair, respectful, and equal treatment for all customers, please know that the actions and sentiments of a few employees in Daphne, AL do not represent Five Guys or the local franchisee."

Google: An employee petition requesting that Google leadership ban police from using Google products received over 1,100 signatures. The CEO issued a statement condemning racial injustice, but said products such as Gmail, Google Suit, and Google Cloud Platform would remain available to all. NASCAR: After banning confederate memorabilia from the races, NASCAR has allowed one of its drivers to express her support for law enforcement. For a race at the Kentucky Speedway, Angela Ruch’s truck will feature a pro-police wrap. The car will feature the American flag with the blue line designed for police officers and the BackTheBlue hashtag, among other supportive displays. Ruch is partnering with The Wounded Blue, an organization supporting police officers wounded in the line of duty. "Everywhere you turn today, good, hard-working police officers are under attack," Ruch said. "We want to show law enforcement officers that we’ve got their backs."

It's unfortunate you feel that way. Thinking you should ask yourself why you feel that way and what lead you to that conclusion. Not only did POTUS give Stone clemency, but he also removed all chains that were attached to him including the financial ones. Which leaves room for Stone to appeal his conviction if he so chooses. In addition, he has a very long history in politics, the truth bombs will be flying and he is one to watch. He's just getting warmed up!
