Janice Dean Excoriates Cuomo for Selling 'COVID Mountain Death Posters'

Fox News meteorologist Janice Dean is known for her sunny personality. She even wrote a book called, "Mostly Sunny." But lately she hasn't had much to smile about, and that's largely the fault of New York governor Andrew Cuomo. She blames his nursing home mandate, which forced nursing home facilities to accept COVID-19 positive patients as they were discharged from hospitals, for the deaths of both of her in-laws. There were thousands of nursing home fatalities in all during the coronavirus outbreak, and Cuomo has refused to accept responsibility for endangering one of the state's most vulnerable communities with his now rescinded over. He has, however, found time to talk about his love life with late night host Jimmy Fallon. Cuomo also recently unveiled a poster called "New York Tough" that supposedly pays tribute to the over 30,000 New Yorkers who died from the virus, and how the state successfully "flattened the curve." Dean referred to it as the "Covid mountain death poster," which Cuomo is selling for $14.99 on his website. The New York Times wasn't a fan of the poster either.

So, by the time she went on "Tucker Carlson Tonight," Dean was furious with the governor on several counts. "My husband lost both of his parents. His mom died in an assisted living facility and his dad in a nursing home. They died of coronavirus alone. We never had a funeral. We never had a wake. We weren't able to see them before they died," Dean said on "Tucker Carlson Tonight." "And to see Governor Cuomo on television just this past week talking about his love life and this disgusting poster that is basically a depiction of 32,000 people that died? It's not funny. It's tone-deaf. And it makes my heart hurt because we're still mourning our loved ones. And we think that part of the reason is because Governor Cuomo allowed over 6,000 COVID-recovering patients into nursing homes for 46 days straight." (Fox News)

Rep. Steve Scalise (R-LA), Dean's fellow warrior in the fight to find justice for New York families affected by the nursing home policy, commended his friend for her leadership and bravery in trying to get some actual answers. Scalise also criticized the governor for joking about his love life, while thousands of New York families are still in mourning.

Grenell: Documents Will Show Intel Officials Who Warned About Steele Dossier Were Ignored

Richard Grenell, the former acting director of national intelligence, said Wednesday that U.S. intelligence officials who expressed doubts early in the Trump-Russia investigation about the infamous Steele dossier were ignored. In an interview on Newsmax TV, Grenell said that documents that have yet to be released will show that career intelligence officials pointed to red flags about the dossier, which the FBI used in its investigation into possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia. “But there are several [documents] that still need to come out,” Grenell told Newsmax. “And these reports will show voices within the intelligence community early on, unheard of voices so far, but voices nonetheless, from the intelligence career officials saying: ‘This doesn’t stack up. This is not something we should be relying on.'” “Those voices were ignored, and their comments were pushed aside and classified information.”

As acting intelligence chief, Grenell began the process of declassifying documents related to the Russia investigation and the dossier, which former British spy Christopher Steele wrote while working for the Democratic National Committee and the Clinton campaign. Grenell declassified footnotes from a Justice Department inspector general’s (IG) report which showed that the FBI received evidence in 2017 that Russian intelligence operatives fed disinformation to Steele. Grenell said that some in the intelligence community ignored those red flags regarding the dossier. “The Russians are knowing about this [sic]. They’re putting out disinformation. Propaganda is what we used to call it. This was an early warning system that was ignored,” Grenell said. “I think that the FBI and the other intelligence agencies have to come clean. They have to say what they knew and when they knew it,” Grenell added.

The FBI cited Steele’s information in four applications for Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) orders against Carter Page, a former Trump campaign aide and prominent figure in the dossier. But the Justice Department invalidated the last two of the orders based on revelations from the IG report, released on Dec. 9. The report said that the FBI made at least 17 “significant” errors and omissions in its FISA applications. According to the IG, investigators failed to tell the FISA Court that Steele’s primary source of information told FBI agents in January 2017 that Steele misrepresented and embellished parts of the dossier, including about Steele. Investigators also found that Steele’s claim that former Trump lawyer Michael Cohen visited Prague in August 2016 to meet with Kremlin insiders was inaccurate. Grenell did not indicate if he expects documents related to the dossier to be released anytime soon. Sen. Lindsey Graham said on Tuesday that he is working to declassify a 40-page FBI memo of the interview conducted with Steele’s primary dossier source.

Barr warns of Chinese efforts to dominate industries, calls out Hollywood, tech giants for caving to pressure

The attorney general accused China of using nefarious means to seek global superiority

Attorney General Bill Barr delivered a dire warning to the U.S. and the world on Thursday regarding what he said could be “the most important issue for our nation and the world in the 21st century” the Chinese Communist Party’s global ambitions. Discussing sectors, including the technology, pharmaceutical, and entertainment industries, Barr described how the Chinese government is “engaged in an economic blitzkrieg” aimed at dominating the global economy and replacing the U.S. as the world’s top superpower.

“The CCP has launched an orchestrated campaign, across all of its many tentacles in Chinese government and society, to exploit the openness of our institutions in order to destroy them,” Barr said during an address at the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum. To achieve their goals, Barr said, the People’s Republic of China (PRC) is utilizing “a wide array of predatory and often unlawful tactics” that include currency manipulation, theft of intellectual property, cyberattacks and espionage. Barr said that the Chinese Communist Party’s “Made in China 2025” initiative “poses a real threat to U.S. technological leadership,” as China seeks to dominate a number of high-tech industries.

The attorney general further warned that the U.S. is already “dangerously dependent” in certain areas, such as rare earth materials used in a wide variety of technological devices and active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs). “As one Defense Health Agency official noted, should China decide to limit or restrict the delivery of APIs to the United States, it could result in severe shortages of pharmaceuticals for both domestic and military uses,” Barr said. At the same time, Barr said, China “has systematically preyed on American companies” by placing obstacles in the health market ranging from price limitations to counterfeiting. He mentioned that Chinese nationals working at U.S. pharmaceutical companies have been caught stealing secrets in both the U.S. and China. “[T]he ultimate ambition of China’s rulers isn’t to trade with the United States,” Barr said. “It is to raid the United States.”

Barr lamented that far too many American companies have complied with Chinese demands in order to seek short-term profits. “Sadly, examples of American business bowing to Beijing are legion,” Barr said, pointing to how Hollywood “regularly censors its own movies to appease the Chinese Communist Party.” Giving examples including the films “World War Z” and “Doctor Strange,” Barr noted how studios have altered key components of films so as not to offend the Chinese government, which would risk having the movies closed off to more than a billion people who make up the Chinese market. “Chinese government censors don’t need to say a word, because Hollywood is doing their work for them,” Barr said. “This is a massive propaganda coup for the Chinese Communist Party.”

Barr also called out tech giants such as Apple, Google, Microsoft and Yahoo for being “all too willing to collaborate with the CCP,” pointing to how Apple removed the news app Quartz from their online store because China opposed their coverage of protests in Hong Kong. Barr issued a grave warning to firms that may believe it is in their best interests to work with China: “If you are an American business leader, appeasing the PRC may bring short-term rewards. But in the end, the PRC’s goal is to replace you.”

Maryland Department of Labor Uncovers Massive Criminal Fraud Scheme

47,500 Fraudulent Unemployment Claims Using Identity Theft Totaling Over $501 Million Alerted U.S. Attorney and U.S. Department of Labor, Office of the Inspector General Maryland Department of Labor Assisting in Investigation of Similar Fraud Cases In States Across the Country

The State of Maryland has uncovered a massive and sophisticated criminal enterprise involving more than 47,500 fraudulent unemployment insurance claims in Maryland and totaling over $501 million. Maryland’s swift and decisive actions to expose this illegal scheme helped shed light on related fraudulent criminal activity in other states across the country. The Maryland Department of Labor (Labor) is coordinating with the U.S. Attorney’s Office and the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Inspector General (DOL-OIG) to investigate and prosecute individuals. “Since the beginning of the pandemic, our department has balanced the goal of quickly paying unemployment insurance benefits to eligible claimants with the need to maintain program integrity due to the prevalence of fraudulent activity occurring in other states,” said Maryland Department of Labor Secretary Tiffany P. Robinson. “With heightened security measures in place, our department quickly detected, reported, and blocked this fraudulent claim activity, saving taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars. We will continue to work with our state and federal partners to prevent fraudsters from capitalizing upon the hardships caused by the coronavirus during these already difficult and uncertain times.”

U.S. Attorney Robert K. Hur stated, “My office and the entire law enforcement community are committed to bringing to justice fraudsters who are preying on citizens during this unprecedented public health crisis by using their stolen personal information to fraudulently attempt to obtain unemployment benefits. We are grateful for our partnership with the State of Maryland in stopping unemployment fraud and believe that this joint federal-state partnership will continue to bear fruit. We will continue to work together to prevent this abuse as well as continue our outreach efforts to make the public aware of COVID-19 scams and frauds. I urge citizens to remain vigilant and to report suspicious activity or fraudulent use of their personal information.” “Today’s announcement results from our strong partnership with the U.S. Attorney’s Office and the State of Maryland, and demonstrates our joint commitment to combating fraud in the Unemployment Insurance program. The OIG will continue to work closely with our law enforcement and state workforce agency partners to aggressively pursue criminals who choose to enrich themselves without regard for taxpayers and individuals who truly need assistance,” said Derek Pickle, Special Agent-in-Charge, Washington Region, U.S. Department of Labor Office of Inspector General. With the unprecedented increase in new unemployment insurance filed claims over the past several months due to COVID-19, and the additional programs offered by the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act (CARES Act), states across the country are seeing an increase in reports of unemployment claims being fraudulently filed by imposters using stolen personally identifiable information.

FBI investigating massive Twitter hack on high-profile accounts

The FBI launched an investigation into a massive Twitter hack that compromised accounts with significant followings. The federal agency on Thursday confirmed an investigation into the incident, during which scammers collected more than $100,000 in bitcoin by hacking prominent accounts, including those of former President Barack Obama, former Vice President Joe Biden, billionaires Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos, and others. "At this time, the accounts appear to have been compromised in order to perpetuate cryptocurrency fraud," the FBI's San Francisco's office told Axios in a statement. "We advise the public not to fall victim to this scam by sending cryptocurrency or money in relation to this incident. As this investigation is ongoing, we will not be making further comment at this time.”

The scam, which occurred on Wednesday afternoon, instructed Twitter users to send cryptocurrency to a specific Bitcoin address, promising they would receive double in return. Large companies such as Uber and Apple were affected, as well as prominent figures including rapper Kanye West, Microsoft founder Bill Gates, and others. "I am giving back to my fans," read one scam tweet from West's account. "All Bitcoin sent to my address below will be sent back doubled. I am only doing a maximum of $10,000,000. (Address redacted) Only going on for 30 minutes!" On Wednesday night, Vice reported that a Twitter insider provided hackers with access to an internal tool used by the company to hijack the accounts. A Twitter spokesperson said that the company is still investigating whether the employee personally hijacked the accounts or gave the scammers access.
