i live in the ~100th largest metro area in the U.S. (according to wiki +/-) and friend works for country health dept.—DOES the COVID19 testing for walk-ins, and sees the activity generated by testing events. His typical week sees 7-20 walk-in test requests and whenever they put on a "Big Weekend Testing Event" it attracts <100 people. It would seem people are largely mask-compliant, but in no fearful rush to get tested, by public means available, at least. More getting tests for STD's according to him.
Most people working in his dept quietly know it's all being pushed way over the top, and are frustrated… but play along for a paycheck… so certainly some culpability there, I'd say.
