DOHUK, Iraq (AP) — Iraq’s minister of water resources says his country will face severe water shortages if agreements are not forged with neighboring Turkey over Ankara’s irrigation and dam projects that have decreased river inflows to Iraq’s parched plains.

Zoran Mateljak heads the Adriatic freshwater division of the World Wildlife Fund. He says the new project could have devastating effects on the local wetlands: "Water is taken away from Hutovo Blato for electricity generation. What we have right now is just half of what is needed to support this sensitive ecosystem.

"Bosnia-and-Herzegovina has a lot of water resources and clean green energy is our main goal with the building of this power plant."

Minister of Irrigation Seleshi Bekele announced July 15 that Ethiopia had started filling the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) without reaching an agreement with Egypt and Sudan on the controversial project addressing concerns of its impact on the two countries' water supply.

Cyber-attacks were carried out recently against Israeli water infrastructure, however no significant damages were caused, the Israeli Water Authority has said.

According to officials, the two attacks were aimed at agricultural water pumps in the Upper Galilee and infrastructure in the centre of the country. No mention was given as to who carried out the attacks.
