NAIL IN THE COFFIN’ FOR HYDROXYCHLOROQUINE — A trio of new studies add to the evidence that malaria drug hydroxychloroquine doesn’t help Covid-19 patients.
A placebo-controlled study of almost 500 patients published Thursday in the Annals of Internal Medicine found that hydroxychloroquine “failed to show a substantial clinical benefit in improving the rate of resolution of Covid-19 symptoms.” Data from a randomized, controlled trial in Spain of 293 patients, published Thursday in Clinical Infectious Diseases, also showed no benefit, Zachary writes.
A U.K. trial of more than 4,500 people found that hydroxychloroquine increased the length of patients’ hospital stays and their risk of dying or needing mechanical ventilation, according to data published on the preprint server bioRxiv. The results are “a nail in the coffin,” said bioRxiv co-founder Richard Sever.
