ComEd to pay $200 million to end federal criminal probe, top state Democrat subpoenaed

News reports says Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan, a Democrat, is the unnamed elected official connected to the probe

Commonwealth Edison Company, the largest electric utility in Illinois, has agreed to pay $200 million to resolve a federal criminal probe into a years-long bribery scheme, the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Chicago said Friday. The payment is part of an agreement to end the federal criminal investigation that also included a deferred prosecution deal under which the utility admitted to arranged jobs and vendor subcontracts – and payments associated with those jobs and subcontracts – for associates of a high-level elected Illinois official. The unnamed public official controlled which legislation was brought to a vote in the Illinois House and exerted “substantial influence” over fellow lawmakers concerning measures affecting ComEd, federal officials also said. News reports have identified the official as Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan, a Democrat.

A Madigan spokeswoman has issued a statement denying any wrongdoing but confirmed that Madigan had been subpoenaed and would cooperate with the ongoing investigation. The U.S. Attorney’s Office on Friday filed a one-count criminal charge for bribery but will defer prosecution for three years, then seek to dismiss it if ComEd abides by certain conditions, including continuing to cooperate with ongoing investigations of individuals or other entities related to the conduct described in the bribery charge. In a statement, ComEd’s parent company, Exelon, said it had cleaned up its lobbying practices and noted it had pledged to fully cooperate with the investigation, according to the Chicago Tribune. The deferred prosecution agreement is subject to approval by the U.S. District Court. A court date for the approval hearing has not yet been scheduled.

Disgraced Dem Congressman Released From Prison Without Explanation

The United States Bureau of Prisons released a disgraced Democratic ex-congressman Thursday without explaining why he should not be out of prison with more than five years left on his sentence. Former Pennsylvania representative Chaka Fattah was convicted on charges of bribery and corruption connected to his failed Philadelphia mayoral campaign, in which he accepted an illegal $1 million loan. But the Bureau of Prisons has not offered an explanation for the release, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer. Fattah's time in Congress came to an end in 2016 when he, along with several associates, was indicted on federal racketeering and influence peddling charges. Fattah resigned from his seat in Congress following the indictment. A federal judge sentenced him to 10 years in prison on a wide range of charges including money laundering, racketeering, and bank fraud.

The sentence is the second-longest prison sentence ever given to a congressman, and Fattah appealed the decision twice in an effort to shorten his prison time. He successfully got his bribery charges overturned by an appeals court, but a federal judge kept his original 10-year sentence intact. One potential reason for his early release is the concern over a coronavirus outbreak at the prison, according to the Inquirer. He was supposed to be released in August 2025. Prior to his imprisonment, Fattah served in the House representing Pennsylvania's Second Congressional District for more than two decades from 1995 to 2016. While in prison, Fattah still received taxpayer-funded federal pensions.

'GET MONEY' Cops hunt bank robber who told teller he didn’t get COVID stimulus check and would start shooting if he didn’t get cash

COPS are hunting a bank robber who told a teller that he didn't receive a coronavirus stimulus check and would start shooting if he didn't get cash. The Houston Police Department is searching for the man who robbed a Woodforest National Bank at 9700 Hillcroft Avenue in Houston, Texas, on July 8. At approximately 9am, the robber walked into the bank - wearing a black banana across his face - and asked to withdraw money. As the man told the teller he wanted to make a withdrawal, he handed over a handwritten note.

The note, written on a piece of notebook paper, read: “I didn’t get a stimulus or that 10k loan. I lost my business to COVID so please make this easy and comply. "I don’t wanna hurt nobody but will if I have to. Any suspicious moves and I will start shooting so please go get my money. "Don’t make anything noticeable!”

According to a Houston Police Robbery Division report, the bank teller said the man - described by witnesses as a black male, 30-39 years old, and about six feet tall - also verbally demanded cash. Although the teller did not see a weapon, she was scared and handed an undisclosed amount of cash to the suspect - prompting him to run away with cash in both his hands. Police said a vehicle was not seen to be involved in the robbery. Surveillance footage shows the man with his hoodie pulled over his head and a black True Religion bran "letterman" jacket. Houston Crime Stoppers, the FBI Violent Crime Task Force and the Houston Police Robbery Division have requested the public's assistance in identifying the suspect.
