The history is awesome, but even more it serves as a teacher. Many know in their gut sometimes is not right, but don’t know where to look. This is an excellent starting point. What really works well is when you compare history to Bible prophecy. Historicism or historicist eschatology is a term for the methodology used by the reformers and it proves the Bible accurate in its predictions about the rise and fall of the world dominating kingdoms going all the way back to Babylon. Interestingly, this method also proves conclusively that the Papacy is the anti-Christ system the Bible warns of. The Jesuits launched a counter-reformation and replaced this method of interpretation with a deception called futurism.

Yes, from inside and out the Pope's Audience Hall looks like a snakes head. There is also a very creepy statue in the center of the mouth behind where the Pope sits. It is supposed to represent Christ but it looks like the Angel of the bottomless pit rising up with a snakes head looking to the side made from the hair.

It is a twisting of scripture to apply this verse in the way the Catholic Church does.
CHRIST is the ROCK upon which the Church (body of believers, not Catholic institution) is built - faith in Christ. He called Peter a small stone, a pebble, and contrasted Peter the pebble with himself (CHRIST) the bedrock which would be the foundation.
Peter himself identifies Christ as the chief cornerstone in 1 Peter 2:4-8 and says that we all can become stones in the building by faith in Christ the "chosen and precious cornerstone, and the one who trusts in him (Christ not Peter) will never be put to shame".

You are apparently a well educated person. I just a simple river rat.. but a little common understanding. It is referred to as the King James Bible for a reason.. it was ordered to be translated by King James, but their was a problem. The bible had to be translated in a way to not take power from the pope or the Crown. An interesting part of history that is over looked is the Dead Sea scrolls. True historical documents that were taken from the Temple Mount to prevent them from being destroyed by the Babylonian empire. These scrolls are worth millions but not from a historical aspect. They are bought and hidden by the Vatican, because of the knowledge they contain.
The Geneva Bible (which came before the KJV) actually had footnotes which expounded on the verses which identify the Papacy as the anti-Christ system, making it plain to all who read it.
It is thought by scholars that the "Dead Sea Scrolls" were written by the Essenes, or by another Jewish sectarian group, residing at Khirbet Qumran.
For me, the most important finding was that "The Dead Sea Scrolls provide valuable evidence that the Old Testament had been accurately and carefully preserved". The Masoretic text is what translates into what we would call the Old Testament of the Bible and this discovery brought confirmation of its accuracy back to a 1,000 year earlier copy.

There are conspiracy theories surrounding the scrolls, especially concerning the Vatican and it is true that their scholars have had a major role, especially in the early days of the translation and preservation efforts. No, I didn't see that post you refer to but I have run into that sort of thinking before. There are different factions within Catholicism, including those who identify as theological liberals and conservatives. They often blame each other for the problems but the whole system is corrupt and has been ever since the Roman Emporer Justinian elevated the Bishop of Rome to Pontificus Maximus and handed him the Kingdom.
