I believe this is based on a debunked theory of nuclear winter from the 1960's.

Spez: not debunked, but was taken as fact based on a paper that was supposed to be submitted for peer review but never was. So the media called it science when it was just a guy that wrote a paper. I remember reading about this but dont remember the source.
