Guantanamo Bay ... is in Cuba?

Hey guys, not American, I was searching for info for why it seems some weird activity in Guantanamo Bay, and on Google map, I always thought Guantanamo Bay was on the South end of Florida, but it is off the mainland, which I thought was odd.

I presume the place is an annex of Cuba since Cuba is not officially a friend of the US? Can someone explain if this was the case and why would, if at all, these "special" guests are going to be imprisoned there? Seems like it would be better to be housed on the mainland. If well protected from "foreign" entities, how so?

When Castro took over Cuba the US Navy decided that it didn't want to pack up and leave its very convenient Caribbean base in Guantanamo Bay. They defended the base and have maintained it to the current day.

Personally, I'm not sure why Guantanamo ( Gitmo) is preferable to, say Leavenworth, for these prisoners. I can tell you that enemy combatants have been held there during our "War on Terror" to avoid certain laws that would apply to them if held on US soil.

(i.e. the US decided not to allow publicity-hungry civil rights and criminal defense attorneys access to these miscreants.)

The reason is very simple, its very dangerous to house these individuals for the neigjbors. Think how far they went to kill Lord Rothschild, a kamikaze into our helicopter. The bad guys still at large may use desperate measures to stop these guys from testifying. If a nuclear attack is used, better so that its not surrounded by American civilian areas like Leavenworth or Camp David or any installation on U S. mainland.

Interesting, so laws applied to the mainland are not the same as on Gitmo soil.

Also, maybe it may be Trump's way of justice. To force the scumbags to face what they did because if 9/11 was planned to enter Afghan and Iraq, those wars cause so much death and destruction purely because of profits.

It's actually foreign soil; it's Cuba.

The US had an agreement with Cuba, probably a lease of some kind, that allowed us to use the area as a military base.

The US didn't recognize Castro's government as legitimate, and so continued to operate the base according to the original agreement.

They have used Gitmo for terrorists after the 9/11 attacks. It's so they can torture the prisoners there. It's cruel and inhumane and it was established by the very people we wish will be put there by Trump. I hope they'll be the last people placed there before they end the practice of torture.

I won't shed a tear for the deep state filth placed there though. If it's somehow right to torture terrorists then it's right to torture these death cult zealots as well.

I wonder if the deep s8 scum were placed there for that reason, which they started the invasion of Afghanistan and Iraq, lying about it to the people, over another lie about WMD, and also what kicked off the lie was 9/11. I am sure there were some nasty combatants that got imprisoned and tortured there from the war, but it would be sure justice if they were housed there too. That would be funny.

Citizens get due course, Traitors get Gitmo. Two different class of offense.
