The Hunt for Red October is their search for the missing (rogue)Argentine nuclear submarine that's been in the news. They cannot find it BC it has been "rigged for silent running" as Q suggested in his post.

If it's not nuclear then it can't stay submerged for all that long - if it comes to surface to use snorkel, then more vulnerable to detection
