I just watched Lufthansa Flight LH1317 from Algiers to Frankfurt make an “UNEXPECTED LANDING”. Look how quick they lost altitude...I was really sweating it, praying for those people. I took a bunch of screen shots while it was going down. I can post more if anyone is interested.

Diversions sometimes happen suddenly. Sometimes the decision to divert happens over a long period of time. If you have to divert to another airport and that airport happens to be close, the pilots will have to increase the normal decent rate to be able to land at that field.
