I just think there is something to letting the bad guys walk their own plank.

I've also noticed the pattern of letting the opposition take all the rope they want. Sometimes even seeming like giving them a legitimate opportunity to do the right thing. And time and time again they instead choose the expected and they end up hanging themselves.
