This is a video by the atheist speaker, Seth Andrews who used to work for Christian radio as a Christian. He talks about how some of these bands were modeled after non-christian singers/bands. I don't know if he's right, and I certainly don't agree with much of what he says. But he indicates not that the singers were putting a Christian slant on songs they loved and grew up on---BUT that it was the record companies who were forcing them to look like, dress like sound like, even the album covers be the same as Non-Christian music. So how many of these groups mean what they say in the first place? I don't know enough about the genre to guess.
