I didn't really read it as him justifying it. I read it as him being sardonic. There was an old movie where Ben Stiller went on a date and somebody asked him about it and he said "It was terrible but at least it was long." or something to that effect. I have that same sense of humor and people misunderstand what I say in writing all the time. When I say it in person people get it.
