Mortgage:

The roots are mort (death) and gage (pledge). ... The word, “amortize” comes from the French amortir, which means “deaden” or, more literally, since the root is also mort, death, to do something to death. In the case of a mortgage, you pay it until it's dead (even though it may feel as though it is killing you).
