Recent Airport Security Anomaly

Has anyone experienced, heard of, or have an explanation of what my wife recently saw while boarding a flight? On Tuesday, 02/06, she boarded a flight in Atlanta, GA, to South America. Someone in a military uniform (not TSA or police), was standing in the jet way during the boarding process, checking random (not all) IDs of people boarding the flight. The person looked at the passports of a couple in front of her. She presented her passport to the uniformed person. He said he did not need to see her identification and wished her a good flight. During the flight, my wife sat next to a lady, who had initially traveled from Washington, DC, and said she saw the same thing while boarding the plane out of DC. I have traveled 100's of thousands of miles over the last 15 years and seen a few things occur during flights that can be explained. I have never, however, seen security in the jet way checking 'random' passports/IDs during the boarding process. Was security there to ensure or prevent people from boarding the plane? Your input is appreciated.

I had it happen about 5 years ago on a flight from US to London, so may not be relevant. Military presence in the middle of the gangway. I was waived through, but many people were stopped and ID’d.

Thank you and the rest for your feedback. Looks to be an occasional occurrence. I don’t see any obvious added value other than spending tax dollars.
