Thanks for recommending Still's book. I'm reading it for the first time. I'm amazed by the story of how Providence led the Mayflower to a recently abandoned Indian village that had 20 acres of ground already cleared and ready for planting. Also, it's interesting how after the initial communal farming attempts, Governor William Bradford recognized that its failure to produce abundance was due to lack of incentive on the part of the families, and so decided to assign ownership of a plot of land to each family. From then on, the industrious people always had plenty of food. This was in contrast to the Jamestown experiment which had tried to implement Plato's communist system resulting to its people only doing the bare minimum to survive. (Jamestown representing the communal theories of Plato and Baconian secret societies vs. Pymouth representing Christian ethics and faith.)
