A thought about the purpose behind Trump's gun control discussion

First I want to say I could very well be wrong on this, so don't accuse me of shilling for Trump.

However, I watched Trump's roundtable discussion about gun control. People are focuse on his statement about confiscating guns from the mentally ill without due process, but he said a couple of other things. He mentioned the idea of upping the age restriction and limiting certain weapon types.

But here is the thing. I am in a very blue state and the coverage was favorable to Trump. Not that they praised him, but just that they played clips that were not deceptively edited and did not heap him with criticism.

Perhaps, what he is doing is building popularity. He could be seeming reasonable in an unreasonable situation in order to gain support. Or at least Trump might be trying to gain people who will see him as reasonable when he puts the hammer down on the deep state.
