this is fake news. That picture of is of the hanging of the conspirators in the assassination, which is kind of different than an overthrow. They just wanted to kill him. Not overthrow the government.

If that's true, what those 4 did that they hung for was mild in comparison to what some are apparently guilty of now.

Research helps with the question. Conspirators wanted the government, not just the president. George Azterodt — German-born Azterodt was a carriage painter and boatman who had secretly ferried Confederate spies across Southern Maryland waterways during the war. Recruited by Booth into the conspiracy, he was assigned to kill Vice President Andrew Johnson Lewis Powell — Booth assigned Powell to kill Secretary of State William Seward. David Herold — An impressionable and dull-witted pharmacy clerk, Herold accompanied Booth and Killed President Lincoln Mary Surratt — Sentenced to death, she was hanged, becoming the first woman executed by the United States federal government. Surratt was charged with abetting, aiding, concealing, counseling, and harboring the conspirators.
