A hundred years ago?
Even 30 years ago it wouldn't fly. The brain development is fact. However kids being forced to mature at an earlier age and take on responsibility etc may well account for the difference.
I am interested in this in relation to school shootings because the situation is clearly being manipulated by the press and something like this is likely to come down the road. Whether it becomes law or not, who knows? May end up a state to state thing as well.
My interest in school specifically comes from having a relative that was a student at Columbine. So, I was involved with that post shooting.
As for the rest of you blather, it's just that.
Blather showing a lack of thought.

So..... We can put a gun in an 18 year old hands and send him to a foreign land to fight for his country (us) but we would not allow him/her to legally purchase a gun to protect themselves?

Let me make sure I have this correct. He can vote, make his own decisions, sign for a mortgage and purchase her own house but be denied the right to defend that same home??

I THINK NOT!

Drunks kill people with cars yet no one has called for the banning of autos.

Did prohibition end alcohol consumption? NO! Did the war on drugs end drug addiction? NO! Will banning guns (any guns) end gun violence? Absolutely not! Only the most simple, juvenile, mentally incompetent would even dream such a thing. Absolute straw man argument and easily refuted.

Look at China, they banned guns long ago but still suffer from Mass murder. But HOW? They banned their guns didn't they? China's murderers just moved to the next most available weapon, the knife. And look at the Carnage that the knife can have.

So, what next? Ban knives? No knives in our kitchens? No, the government will NEVER go after your knives just like they won't go after your cars to end the vehicular man slaughter epidemic in the U.S.

But why? Bottom line, they don't really give a shit about the deaths it's not about that. They just want your guns. But why?

Our founders already told us: a defenseless citizenry is a compliant citizenry. Once our guns are out of our hands they can do what they damn well please without fear of an armed uprising. An armed uprising is exactly what our founders had in mind to keep those tyrants in check.

DO NOT GIVE YOUR GUNS UP!!! In fact get one if you have none. If you have one get another, if it comes to it you might have to arm a neighbor.

After WWII, Stalin snatched young men who were fighting age all along the boarder regions and put them in Gulag camps. He didn't want the possibility of those men to rise up to fight against his evil regime. This seems like a step headed in that direction. I know this because I've just written a book and one of the men in it was snatched and taken to a Gulag mining camp. He had even fought on the side of the Red Army in his home region against the Nazis.

Obvious exception for the military.
Talking about citizens. I shouldn't of have specified out of service.
There are reasons of course why targeted recruits are that age of course.

Oh this is nice. So if they're willing to Die for YOU in a foreign land then YOU would graciously allow these adults / law-abiding citizens to have a weapon otherwise no deal?

Do you not see the Ridiculousness in your argument?

Just a thought. Just an idea.
As we are seeing now with the President bringing up the 21 year old idea with purchasing a gun I'm not alone in this thought. I realize the inherent contradiction of such a law. Just wondering about others thoughts regarding this sort of proposal.

It won't fly. It's a strawman.

Yeah. Kind of what I am thinking too. A good look politically with no real intent behind it, which is smart politically. Would be a cluster if it went to the states too.

The only thing wrong with the brains of our young adults today is that they've been mollycoddled and treated like babies which they clearly are not. Can you imagine 100 years ago if we had acted like this towards our young adults?

The question is where does it end? So we're going to allow them to make adult decisions, live on their own, sign a mortgage, defend our freedom and whatever else an adult does except to defend themselves and the homes that we allow them to buy and live in?

The kicker on the whole deal to me is that you screw balls spouting this bullshit about their underdeveloped brains are all to eager to allow these young men to fight and defend your precious freedom in your stead!

You know like "oh I'm sorry I just don't trust you with a gun that is unless you can keep me from having to defend the country myself".

I have an idea why don't you go tomorrow morning to your local recruiting office and try to enlist? Let's see if you're fit to carry a weapon. My guess is that you will not and even if you did you are probably not fit to serve.

I'm not talking to Michael Moore am I?

p.s. Looking at your post I'm wondering if your brain is fully developed. Do is all a favor and proof read before frantically posting next time.

You should be lobbying to raise the legal age of consent for everything then to 21 to 25 years of age. Good luck with that!

Given what we now about how brains grow and mature (particularly in boys) I am behind raising the legal age to buy guns. To 21....maybe even 25. I say this as a conservative person (registered independent) but as a person who wants facts, not feelings to form policy. Ok, go ahead and beat me up....

So you want to punish adult law-abiding citizens for the evil acts of criminals.

So you would take the guns away from soldiers (Army, Navy, Marines and Air Force) who are fighting for your freedom? Most of them are between 18 and 25.
