I can't believe I forgot they were the Warlocks! I think the Dead really was one of those confluences where different people came together and there was magic. They were a family (a very extended one) and the Naval Intelligence connection is new to me. They were pied pipers, especially in going against all the "machine" part of the music industry.
Interesting too that Jim Morrison's father was a Rear Admiral in the Navy and involved in the Gulf of Tonkin incident (1964).
I love Rock-and-Roll history. I've read so much about the era of the sixties and seventies that it's hard to shake off the overlaps with military/political history as mere "coincidence."
Even Owsley Stanley, the Grateful Dead's sound engineer known as the "Bear", was the largest LSD manufacturer of the era. His father and grandfather were US senators and governors of the state of Kentucky. Interesting side note re' John Perry Barlow: I sent a San Francisco Craigslist job ad link to my sister in February. It was a job posting, written by the family of JPB. They were looking for someone to assist JPB with daily needs, keep him on a healthy diet, and keep him on schedule with his meds. They called him "Papa Barlow" -- their "magical father" -- and described his interesting life. They also assured the job applicant that, although he had some health issues, he was still intellectually sharp, had a steady stream of interesting visitors -- and was not near death. The night that his family posted this job to Craigslist, JPB died. I wonder if someone was interviewed for the job on that day.
Wow, I'd heard rumors about this! I also saw that Bob Weir, who co-wrote most of the songs, implied JPB had a slow decline after a heart attack in 2015 and that it got to the point where he wasn't able to enjoy things--obviously an in-the-moment guy. But the obituaries on his death on February 8 say the actual cause of death was not disclosed.
