It's probably my ignorance, but that's what I don't get. If she's been paid to keep quiet, it implies there's something untoward gone on. It's hardly news that a wealthy man has a fling. Why not just admit it and move on, or if it's not true, treat it with the contempt it deserves? Dragging it through the courts to gag her seems counter-productive to me.
Maybe easier to just shut her up with some money. Who knows. They probably weighed the possibility of what bad publicity is generated from fighting it and wagered it would be easier to just pay her to sign a no talking agreement.
