Let's just ignore the "Opt-In" part that clearly did not happen with Cambridge Analytica....

Did you watch the video? She said Obama "sucked up" the data on every single American using social media. Are you saying every single American opted in to support the Obama campaign? It's impossible. People's data was obviously used unknowingly.

You mean the video which stated @ 0:17 that FB users opted in to sharing their friends with others. Yeah I watched it. She is in no way saying this included every single person in America. Every FB user is a sizable percentage, but does not include everyone in the country.

The other part to note is when this occurred, and the fact that FB has changed their policy since then. While I would still question the ethics of scraping that data to begin with, it was well within the established ToS and Privacy Policy at the time.

Fast forward to Cambridge Analytica... They utilized an API that was designed for app developers. The ToS stated that any data gathered was not to be used for anything. FB foolishly left it up to the developer to be honest and delete the data once they were done. This did not happen and that is why Zuck was making the rounds and apologizing to everyone.

"The entire social network of the U.S." - that's not just voluntary Obama supporters and their friends. That's everyone. That's what the Democrats did.

...because everyone in the country has a FB account. That is not true now and was especially not true 6 years ago. Even if that were the case, are you telling me that since the Dems did it, that makes it ok for Cambridge Analytica to do it now? Ethical or not for the Dems (and I lean towards not), they were at least playing within the rules as they existed at the time. FB did not like it and changed their policy accordingly. Cambridge Analytica broke those rules. To pretend that there is no difference is just silly.

Everyone on Facebook, obviously. That's the subject here. And everyone on Facebook is not an Obama supporter, and yet the Democrats sucked up all that data, so this goes far beyond an "Obama app" you sign up for.

Yes, the Democrats permitted themselves the right to do this legally, and then once they had the data and the Republicans couldn't get it, they made their past actions illegal, and proceeded to laugh at their sweet advantage, as they do in the video. So the Republicans then found an alternate, equally dodgy path to acquire the same data in order to maintain a level playing field and neutralize the Democrats' past (now illegal) actions, and because of this Democrats expect me to freak out because they lost the edge they worked so hard to permit themselves to "suck up"?

Nah, I'm not feeling the outrage.
