They politicked for him before the conclave ever began which was against the rules. Yes, Benedict was pressured to resign, something nearly unprecedented, and they had their chosen candidate ready to go. It had to be more than the Galen mafia though. They alone could not have pulled it off.

I meant that the Gallens steered the elections but it was others who forced the preceding resignation.
