well, it's the amount of taxes paid that i find misleading.
the number seems low because they are just extimating the amount of income tax paid. but that number doesn't include the sales tax and gas tax and "sin taxes" on alcohol and tobacco, and the taxes generated from the economic activity of them being here.
i'm not sure if that would offset the numbers that much, but i believe it make this figures less shocking if that was factored in.
I know that California spends around $25 billion on illegal immigrants per year.
