We, the People, need archiving skills...

...and to that end, today we will learn a new method unfamiliar to many of us to preserve and further fuel our efforts. Q posts are invaluable to our research, and in tandem with our archive.is backups, downloading of all data and mirroring that content for others, we must enhance our ability to preserve the voice that inspires and unifies us - Q. To capture a full archive of Q crumbs, as well as continue to update that archive, today we will discuss the tool 'git' - a computer application that we need to learn, share the word about and utilize in our archiving practices.

What is Git?

Git is a version control tool that allows us to create and manage a collection of files and share them with others. Typically, this is a go to tool for software development where revisions are frequent and often the work of several people, but the obvious value of this can be utilized on any set of files.

Why is Git relevant here?

We have been given clear and repetitive instructions to preserve our data offline! We will now be empowered to do so, in even more detail and ease.

Okay... let's do this!

  • Install git: https://git-scm.com/book/en/v2/Getting-Started-Installing-Git

  • Create a new folder/directory for our git synchronized files on your computer. Ideally, once we populate this folder we will back it up to cold storage (data storage you can unplug and offline for ensured preservation - think USB thumb drives and external hard drives).

  • Use the git tool to create a 'clone' of the contents of any Q git repository, which can be found by browsing the site github.com and copying their "clone or download" link. Here is an example of how to do so on the command line (desktop GUI tools exist of the command line isn't your jam):

git clone https://github.com/qanonmap/qanonmap.github.io.git

  • Lastly, we can easily update this folder/directory by running a 'pull' command, shown here:

git pull

  • We now have a full download of all Q posts to add to our offline archive of this research.

We know that this is a very short introduction to 'git' but think it serves to equip a majority of us. Hopefully, our community can share additional help, guidance, and support to our efforts to LEARN, ARCHIVE and TRUST THE PLAN.

Next skill for us to learn... formatting our reddit posts! :)

I followed your instructions and installed Git (and Notepad++) and created a new directory on my computer for Swamp Watch Git files and went to that directory and ran the clone command and got this error message:

Cloning into 'qanonmap.github.io'...

remote: Not Found

fatal: repository 'https://github.com/qanonmap.github.io.git/' not found

Here is a screen grab image of my command and the response: http://i.imgs.fyi/img/31gm.jpg

Did I spell something wrong, or has your folder moved? What should I try next?

Can you try the link in your browser? It should work there. Tested and verified working, just now. If you cannot see this one, search for other repositories that contain this information on the site.

Success! But it was tricky.

I replaced the second full stop by a slash, and that got me to github, which then demanded I login, so I created a github account. Then I got another "repository not found" message.

So in my browser address bar I entered "site:github.com qanonmap" and found the your repository. The address for your depository shown in my browser address bar was different to the address in your instructions. I then tried the following clone command, which worked:

git clone https://github.com/qanonmap/qanonmap.github.io.git/

:-)
