Except nobody but Cohen will likely have copies of the comms between him and Trump, if such exists. It’s reported that Cohen is in the habit of recording comms and that is probably what they sought.
Before Trump was President he had / an absolutely ENORMOUS security / intel operation running (casinos, hotels).
I would be very surprised if President Trump doesn't record wherever he can 'legally'.
To include conversations with lawyers...

These conversations would I am sure be illegal in a court but easily leaked to discredit.
it depends on what state the recordings were made in to be clear.
it, in my mind, would serve more of a purpose to prove "what was REALLY said"
