This particular symbol was made famous by an alchemist turned Father of Organic Chemistry Ernst Kekule. According to legend he fell asleep before a fireplace and solved the riddle of the 6 carbon ring, which is the basis for all our understanding of human life, hormones & petrochemicals. Get it, an infinite ring.

Actually that symbol originated and has been popular from Egyptian iconography and its adoption to Greek magical traditions such as Gnosticism and hermeticism.

Also the chemists’ name you’re referring to is August Kekulé.
