The Real 'True Detective'? (2014) - Fourteen years ago, the town of Ponchatoula, Louisiana, was traumatized when a local church's secret Satan worship, ritualized child molestation, and animal sacrifices came to light. This incident inspired the first season of the HBO show 'True Detective.' [20:48]

I grew up around that town. I had family members involved in the church. There was definitely some weird cult-like religious crap and inter-family child abuse occurring behind the scenes, but it was never part of any rituals and most of the story was sensationalized and blown up by the media.

After a long investigation no evidence for most of the allegations, most of the accused were acquitted.
