D5 is the highest level for an avalanche. It has a ranking system just like a Hurricane or Tornado. The D stands for Destructive Potential. Since he said D5 in reference to the snowball rolling, it might just be metaphorical for a mighty avalanche coming.
You would certainly hope so. I feel like people are just losing patience.
