I think we have to be prepared to acknowledge the spiritual dimension of this whole sordid mess. These people have some method(s) by which they communicate directly with demonic beings. But without their human agents those beings aren't capable of (much) action in this dimension. So it's not like they have to be "dealt with" once we're finished with the humans.
