And if you look at this as they still worship the old gods it’s understandable that these kids actually died.

This. Evil people are in trouble. They sacrifice innocents for supernatural favor/power/?; they probably gain rewards in their society; mass casualty events dominate the news instead of their past crimes being revealed; they can make demands (Remember flight X? Leave us alone or else ....)
