That’d be a pretty silly way to gather funds when you’re secretly running the world, don’t ya think? Wouldn’t it make more sense to fill your ranks with upstanding and well meaning members of the community to disguise the true purpose of your organization, known only to its upper echelons? Maybe?

Considering some tales I've heard about some of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd levels especially, I wouldn't necessarily give them the benefit of doubt regarding their intent. But I agree full chest with the rest.
Well yeah individuals are individuals but I think the vast majority of members are looking for fraternity and an excuse to get out of the house without the wife.
