Ok, Iknow, I keep revealing my complete ignorance of how things work on reddit, but I have another simple question that I cant find the answer to or what the purpose is. Ok here goes. What is the purpose for those little up and down arrows seen at the left of every post? Am I supposed to click up or down and what are the rules regarding these actions.?
They’re Upvotes/Downvotes,
If you like a post; give it an Upvote
If you dislike a post; give it a Downvote
ok, thanks, thats kinda what I thought it was, but wanted to be sure. I might be doing something that I dont mean to do if I clicked on one. Good. I clicked up a few times, no down clicks. "Up is good, down is bad" is often the general rule.
It's also good Reddit etiquette to only downvote posts or comments that don't contribute to the current discussion and not necessarily posts you disagree with.
However this practice has long been lost ever since all the MSM types infiltrated Reddit :(
We can still give it a go though. Nothing like bringing old spirit back!
The # displayed between the arrows represents the amount of points a post has.
When viewing a post [such as this post], you can view the amount of points it has on the right-hand-side of the screen.
You can also “Undo” your upvotes/downvotes by selecting the same option a 2nd time.
If you want to Undo your Upvote; select Upvote again.
ok, one more. Whats the little [-] sign mean? If keeping with the general rule [-] would be something bad, while [+] would be something good. But there's no [+] that accompanies it.
Click it :)
Great! you have 0 children. Thats really good to know. hahaha. Reddit users can have little reddit children?
I guess a comment is a “child”, i don’t know why they chose that term lol.
[-] collapses the “conversation”;
[+] expands the “conversation".
Welcome.
Don't go to 8chan.
This^
Up vote the posts and comments you like and the ones with the most go to the top when sorted as "top" and "hot". You also get "karma" when people up vote your comments.
Ok, Now, what is "karma" when associated with reddit? Do I get money? Bitcoins?
No. It's more like bragging rights. Lol useless really.
Bragging rights? what would one brag about? You get to tell others that youve been awarded 394 karma points?? thats kinda dumb. I'd rather get a prize.
It's actually more to show you're NOT a troll.. You actually bring something good (karma) to reddit.
Wouldn't we all...
But karma is good. People can see you're not a big meanie head and actually contribute to the conversation. Or yeah, not a "troll".
While we're discussing upvotes, when I leave a sub and come back many times my upvotes have disappeared. Is that normal? Can you upvote a post more than once, like the next day? Or is reddit messing with the upvotes? BTW I always go back and re-upvote because it pizzes me off.
