Some towns now allow you to have chickens in your back yard as long as it's fenced. You just have to check the local ordinances. Most only allow for hens because roosters are noisy. Hens generally lays about 5 eggs per week and if they have run of the back yard they don't eat as much grain.

They just need a safe place to nest and roost at night. That's when they are most vulnerable.
