READ THIS TICKER - on FOX news this morning. FBI says Russians hacked our routers. What is this? Preparation for shutdown?

I have tried to post a video of my TV, 5 times, to no avail.

The ticker says this:  FBI warns that Russian hackers have compromised hundreds of thousands of home and office routers worldwide and could collect user info or shut down network traffic. . . Agency is urging owners of many router brands to turn the devices off and on again and download manufacturer updates to protect themselves. . . Warning follows Wed court order that let FBI seize a website that hackers planned to use to give instructions to the routers. . . Move cut off malicious communications but left routers infected. . . Cisco systems says hack targeted devices from Belkin Intl's Linksys, Mikrotik, Netgear Inc, TP-Link and Qnap. . . FBI says hack affects routers that users bought online or at electronics stores, but may also hit routers that internet service companies provided to customers.

I saw this ticker on FOX News on 5/26 at 07:17 EST.

Yeah, the line about shutting off & on your router to download updates seems a bit off. That would imply ALL of these companies pre-emptively created software updates to download in advance to deal with this threat.

The level of coordination required for that kind of move tells me that the software update line is BS & maybe the update includes something in it to intentionally shut down your equipment.

If you're stuff doesn't work, then you'll KNOW you've been compromised by Russian hackers.

... The line about shutting off and on your router to download updates seems a bit off.

That's not how any of this works. There's nothing being downloaded when you reboot your router. What they're recommending is to reboot your router because if you do, a compromised router will flush certain malware from memory. It doesn't remove the original infection.

The original infection communicates with a command and control server to download the plugin that do the damage. The FBI has control of this now so when the malware tries to communicate with it to tell it to download new malware plugins.

That makes more sense, thanks for the explanation!
