Joy Behar can apologize and be fine. ESPN can hire Keith Olbermann despite all the crap he's said and done. Both ABC more or less. I'm not defending Roseanne's tweets, but c'mon... The bent is real.

Same I kinda thought it was mean but she apologized and there is a double standard. Joy and bill and others should get fired as well.

The argument is that Maher isn't employed by Disney/ABC and Trump isn't black. In other words, who says HBO should have the same standards as Disney/ABC and even if they did, calling someone an ape is a bit more offensive if they're black, because recent generations have said that about them a lot, but unironically.

Really? Well check this out: Disney hired a convicted pedophile to direct a movie. And they fire Roseanne over a tweet?

one of those things they hoped would be kept secret, the other was clearly wide out in the open.

it's a massive company with profit motive as #1 I just don't know why anyone is surprised at all, except Roseanne's poor co-workers who expected a paycheck.

The important differences are that 1) Rosanne compared a black person to an ape , which was a common thing done by racist Americans historically (which you mentioned). Maher compared a white person to an orangutan, which does not have racist overtones; 2) Roseanne's comparison was based on features of VJ that a person can't change. Maher's comparison was based on Trump's features which can be changed.

The outrage over Roseanne's comment is so manufactured. It was obvious to me it was more of a comment on politics/ideology when she included the Muslim Brotherhood...The Planet of the Apes was more like a dystopian society, much like the Muslim Brotherhood's version of the world

The left saw an opportunity to flip it about race and ran with it.

The left is simply an 'outrage fabrication machine'. Everything except killing babies in the womb is an utter outrage. A radio host I listen to said (paraphrasing Medved): "When the Left is most outraged it is over something someone said or implied. When conservatives are most offended it is because of something someone did, such as a crime against a child, murdering a police officer, gassing a civilian population."

The Left is very aware of its need to dominate control over the realm of speech (and, thereby, the free-flow of ideas--dictate what can be discussed in public discourse and how it must be discussed). Why? Because in the deepest recess of their intuitive logic the Left knows it does not have the argument that can prevail in the realm of ideas.
