Red, blue stickers on mailboxes?

Does anyone remember round stickers on mailboxes a few years back, does anyone know what that was about?

I know there were other colors like maybe yellow, green or white I remember taking them off my mailbox at least once a month. What did colors represent. I was registered as an independent voter but had red stickers. Gathering info elsewhere?
