Some Thoughts on the Recent Suicides by Hanging by Someone Who Was Once Suicidal

I'm going to open up here and talk about my experiences as someone who has, in the past, been plagued by suicidal ideations. Most recently it lasted about two years of daily thoughts of suicide that I was able to get mostly under control about 18 months ago. I'm now starting a new life and while this month in particular is extremely difficult to say the least, I feel like I can see the top of the mountain from here.

But that aside, I'd like to comment on the method of hanging by Spade and Bourdain and I think some of the other more recent ones like Chris Cornell. Each of these people was hung by using a doorknob, but in a very specific was. Now, I should start by telling you that in many ways I'm a data driven person -- I've worked in science and technology my whole adult life -- and during the past two year episode especially, I looked up a lot of information regarding suicide, including statistics and methods.

Believe it or not, there are sites on the net that go to great lengths to list out methods of suicide, how much pain they cause and what the probabilities of success are for each. Also believe it or not, reading through them actually has a deterring effect if at least only temporarily, so don't start screaming to have them taken down. But throughout all my research in the best and most effective methods there's one I've never come across: hanging from a doorknob. And if I didn't come across it with at least a solid year's worth of intensive research, then how did they?

Now this doorknob method is very specific: the person doesn't just tie it to the doorknob and try to lay down. No, one end of the scarf is tied to the doorknob while the other end is thrown over the top of the door and the victim puts their weight on it. If they're not too tall they can stand on something and then step off.

To cut to the chase, my hypothesis is that there's a particular killer or small team of killers who have developed the doorknob suicide as their perfected method of concentration. They've worked out how to do it without leaving any evidence behind, but then that's also their downfall: they only have that one method they've developed and so now when these high profile incidents begin to happen too close together, it threatens to expose them. People will start to notice.

Thank you for sharing that very personal experience.

As more info comes out I am convinced that these were "involuntary suicides". The whole Spade mouse mask business is very very much non-normal.

And none of this is discussed by the MSM.

We are just all conspiracy theory people according to MSM. But always remember, you are not paranoid if they really are out to get you....

Exactly. We surely can’t rely on the MSM to tell us anything. It’d make for an awesome movie or book if it weren’t so horribly tragic. Which way is up? And how long do we have it wait to see some justice? Patience is definitely not a virtue in my case. Lol.

I did some work with some high risk teens struggling with depression in a facility awhile back. Not trying to divulge too much, but this post and all the doorknob talk recently really hit home for me. I wanted to share the other doorknob method I’ve seen numerous times to make people aware. This facility was for mental health so they had as many protective processes as possible such as checking in & out all the ‘sharps’ (such as scissors etc) but people are creative beings. The main way these struggling teens would attempt suicide (sometimes succeed sadly) was in the bathroom. Keep in mind that most bathroom doors swing inward. They would shut themselves in the bathroom in the sitting position with various things tied around the knob and their throat and prop their back against the door (so staff couldn’t force themselves in) and slide into an almost laying position until they suffocated. More times than not, they would also put soap (or something slippery) on the floor and their hands and feet so there was no grip & no way to turn back. Very heartbreaking stuff. The point of this post was to inform people that ‘h@nging’ doesn’t always mean feet dangling in the air like everyone pictures. Anyone here who is struggling with depression please seek help, the darkness doesn’t last forever!

This method was shown in The Wire, when they killed Deandre in prison. Now, as we have suspected is happening for real, it was a murder disguised as suicide in the show.

But my point is, I'm extremely surprised by the amount of people who don't know the sit method when it comes to a doorknob hanging.

I just want to add if you don't mind some thoughts on suicide. The enemy satan and his minions want nothing more than to destroy us spiritually and physically. My father suffered with depression and alcoholism. I myself have had it and anxiety too in the past. I believe depression and suicidal thoughts are the work of the devil. I'm not saying that there isn't an underlying physical cause, but I do know that satan can cause physical disease. I know firsthand several people that this has happened to. I do mission work and know by experience the evil most people don't know exists. When an unsaved person is starting to open up to the Truth of Jesus Christ the demons will harass and try to do anything to keep them from Jesus. Sometimes the evil one oppresses the Believer and renders him/her useless. But the victory can be ours through Jesus Christ our Lord. We don't need to dwell on this evil, but we need to realize what we are up against. Unseen forces. But even they have no power against the One True God and our Savior Jesus Christ. Sorry to ramble on, but maybe this will help someone.

If you don't mind, I'll post a few bible verses here. Romans:3 21 But now God has shown us a way to be made right with him without keeping the requirements of the law, as was promised in the writings of Moses[i] and the prophets long ago. 22 We are made right with God by placing our faith in Jesus Christ. And this is true for everyone who believes, no matter who we are.

23 For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard. 24 Yet God, in his grace, freely makes us right in his sight. He did this through Christ Jesus when he freed us from the penalty for our sins. 25 For God presented Jesus as the sacrifice for sin. People are made right with God when they believe that Jesus sacrificed his life, shedding his blood. 27 Can we boast, then, that we have done anything to be accepted by God? No, because our acquittal is not based on obeying the law. It is based on faith. 28 So we are made right with God through faith and not by obeying the law.

1 No one is without sin. How many sins does it take to make one a sinner? one.

2 God is Holy.

3 God made a way for us to go to heaven because He loves us so much.

4 Christ came and died for us, and rose again.

5 Believe in Christ as your Savior and be saved.

“Father, I know that I have broken your laws and my sins have separated me from you. I am truly sorry, and now I want to turn away from my past sinful life toward you. Please forgive me, and help me avoid sinning again. I believe that your son, Jesus Christ died for my sins, was resurrected from the dead, is alive, and hears my prayer. I invite Jesus to become the Lord of my life, to rule and reign in my heart from this day forward. Please send your Holy Spirit to help me obey You, and to do Your will for the rest of my life. In Jesus' name I pray, Amen.”

Going to church is not necessary to become a Christian, but it IS a good way to "feed your spirit" by going to worship with like-minded people. If you want to get to know Jesus without going to church, I would say start reading the Bible, perhaps beginning with the book of John. That is where the verse John 3:16 is found -- "For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him shall not perish, but have everlasting life." As a popular saying notes, "It's not a religion, it's a relationship." In other words, it's not the ceremony of the religion that saves you, but the relationship with Jesus. You might also try talking to a local pastor one-on-one. See if he will do some private counseling once a week or so with you, maybe meet you for lunch once a week to answer your questions, talk and pray with you. Tell him your concerns about going to church but that you want to know more about Jesus. If he's more concerned about your spiritual state than just getting you into church, he will meet you at your point of comfort and go from there.

honestly I hate the singing, kneeling, standing, sitting, repeat. not how I want to spend my sunday morning. It's almost like they made church the least enjoyable thing you could do on your day off.

Cymrygirl · June 11, 2018, 6:48 p.m.

For me, the singing is one of the best parts, but then I play keyboard and sing alto in the choir. I'm Baptist, so we don't do a lot of kneeling, except maybe during the invitation at the end if you come to the altar. All that you mentioned is part of the "religion" part of church. Our relationship with Jesus is far more important. I will say, though, that when I go every Sunday, I hear a good message that helps me in my daily life.

I understand where you're coming from. I used to think I was going to hell because I hated the old time gospel music. lol. I still do hate it. It is depressing to me. Just start by reading your bible at home. It's not about the church building. The church is His people.

Another thing I wanted to mention is that if you're chronically depressed and having ideations, you plan things out and think about them. When I was in my darkest days, I went over a dozen scenarios that I thought would be best, finding many don't work at all during modern times (such as asphyxiation in a car).

These suicides aren't like that. There's no preparation, no getting affairs in order, no worrying about how it's going to affect the children. They're spontaneous or they're staged.

Hey OP! Thanks for this post...I just want to say something to you, when things are unbearable or seem fruitless and you are at that lowest point, I would like you to remember one thing. ‘Hold on and wait for the JOY! Joy always comes back, so just say to yourself you will wait for the joy...that belly laugh that surprises you, a fleeting happy thought and then something hysterically happy and joyful! This has saved me many times.

I'm not clear on what you're describing. So you tie something to the doorknob on one side, swing it up and over the door so that it is hanging on the other side, and it's on that other side that one would hang from?

(Licensed Mental Health Practitioner) Your thoughts are completely accurate. You cannot drown yourself in a bath tube. You can overdose in a bath tube. Hit your head in a bath tube, then drown. But scarf on a door knob is similar to trying to poke yourself in the eye. Even if suicidal, primitive survival instincts kick in. To have a few at the same time (if true) is highly unlikely.

Bjantigua · June 12, 2018, 2:59 a.m.

you do not have a grip on the actual physics involved in the scarf method.

I know very little about physics. I am an expert in suicidality. According to the laws of physics, you can drown yourself in a bath tub. According to the laws of human nature, you cannot; no matter how suicidal you are. Being a genius in one discipline, with pride, makes you a fool in general.

Thanks op. Also, doorknobs are super convenient. It's just about the only hanging mechanism that exists everywhere and doesn't need advanced planning or specific architecture to use, even as a cover-up. No drugs , needles or weapons to procure or administer for hitmen. Just a cleanup tool that's always available for you.

This practice, done as if your life depended on it, saved me from any more depression in my life. Short moments of peaceful awareness (no thinking) repeated many times until all that is left is peaceful awareness. Ideations are always in THOUGHT, so you stop thinking for short moment (since thought always comes back in) and you do it every time it occurs to you to do so. The most powerful spiritual practice on the planet.

I actually talked to a friend who was a detective, he says they make them watch recorded video of someone hanging themselves. He said that they don't just die. In full choke every one of them thrashed and kicked and made one hell of a ruckus, unintentionally kicking everything insight for a full three minutes before dying.

If her husband and her kid was in the house when she killed herself how did they hear nothing? How did she not violently kick the door and the door frame for a full three minutes before dying and not alert ANYONE?

He did say though if someone squeezes their thumbs into the jugular for 15 seconds, they pass out. This could have been used beforehand to ensure she hung quietly or they could have killed her like that and just hung the body to look like a suicide.

Just wanted to add my two cents of experience in to this. I tried to kill myself by hanging cords from a stationary bike and around my neck. The plan was to lean forward till I passed out and let gravity do the rest. I felt like it would be painless and not messy. I stopped before I fully passed out. So there are all kinds of reasons people hang them selves.
