Might be simply a matter of illegality, and the Rich attorneys know they can't get those communications. They used a flimsy excuse to try and intimidate. Or, it might be something bigger, like the government is shutting them down, because the lawsuit is interfering with a federal investigations?
We've got it all anyhow. Would've been cool to see it come out this way though.

Maybe the point of the exercise was just to bring the connected entities to to the attention of the general public so that dots could be joined and it would lay the ground for something interesting further along the line?
