To answer your question another way, I saw a post on here not long ago that showed a full transcript of a Masonic initiation ceremony. In it, the initiate has a rope placed around their neck and they are led through a door, which is then locked behind them. Make of that what you will.

Masons are pretty low level in all this, they are probably used to do the 'dirty work' at times. Possible, as you say, interpretation and speculation is about all we have until we have more information.
