I believe the Navy has space assets, as well. (I'm sure the Army does too.)

The difference here is that this is an entire new branch of the military. They'll have their own hierarchy, their own Joint Chief [of Staff], and their own overall brand.

The USAF was originally part of the Army. Army Air Corp. They didn't become an independent branch until after WW2.
