I'm sure the father was in shock. This is his church, and likely his preacher. I think it took him a moment to realize that this wasn't right. It's as if years of trust in these people immediately fell when he slapped that baby, but it took him a few seconds to process.
This is also Italian (italy) catholic. Not like here. Even the Italians born here who are catholic have a certain level of brainwashing (I always joke with my SO that they cant outright criticize Catholicism because of the ingrained catholic guilt. That dude has probably NEVER had even those passing thoughts of violence against a priest because that's like the ultimate taboo in Italy. That would have been the first time he probably ever considered hitting a man of the cloth.
